Try, Try Again

Walker rode along with me to pick up my new car, a round trip that took a little over two hours.  Along the way I told him about the other night when I found myself holding my breath in fear while I was walking.  I don't really like to talk to Walker about my diet wars, since he's never had a fat day in his life and he usually just tells me something rather lame like, "Eat more fruit!"  This time around, though, he really listened and when I finished talking he offered a suggestion that I think is worth exploring.  He told me to leave the numbers out of it. I didn't know what he was talking about so he explained:  I know how to eat healthy. I know how to exercise.  He thinks the scale is what's stressing me out, that seeing the numbers drop is the root of it.  He suggested that I ditch the scale and just focus on making the best choices every day, with the meals as well as the exercise.  Such a simple idea, of course I have to try it.

In about a month I have another follow up at the cancer center.  Between now and then I'm going to try to do as Walker suggested, and see what happens.  I'm going to stay away from junky food and make sure I do something active every day, whether it's an exercise tape or a bike ride or raking the yard.  If I'm still stressing at my appointment I'll discuss it with my doctor.

  1. Had to go down a bit on your blog to see your new car. Love it. What a change in style and color indeed.

Now with the weight issue, I have the same problem. I think that watching the scales works for me...but not all who keep track daily will see any significant change. He may be right on for you. [some people never gain and can eat anything and everything, huh? Bud is the same.] But honestly, for me, I think it's the heart medication that has put on the pounds in my case. You may perhaps check and see if your meds are adding pounds. I know there is nothing you can do about it, 'cause we all have to take our meds to keep healthy and alive ---if you take meds--- But, for me finding that the drugs I'm taking puts on weight, gave me peace of mind.

Desert Shadows and Week's Summary is my day's post link if you'd care to join me.

    Have a glorious weekend.

  2. It sounds like your Walker is on the right path. Your car is cool. Joe doesn't like red but I do. My husband has a problem staying up to 156 to 160. I do not have that problem! I could stand to lose about 30 pounds, but I doubt that I will lose them anytime soon. I love to eat.

  3. Have you read the blog A new Dawn for me? Dawn loses weight without weighing in, she only uses sizes and how clothes fit on her to measure her progress.

She wrote a little bit about how that felt just recently:

Good luck with your new scale free life! :)

  4. I am sure your no-weigh-in will work if you cut calories and set a walking program. Burn more calories that you take in. I don't want to go against Walker, but for me, I would weigh in. It will encourage you if you see the scales drop even a pound or two...then lose another pound or two. Getting started is the hardest part.

  5. The plan I was on last year only allowed us to weigh every six weeks. It was fun to see how much progress there was in that much time. But now I've backslidden and have to hit it again seriously! Smart guy, that Walker!

  6. I haven't owned a scale in 15 years. I judge the success of diet and exercise by the way my clothes fit (or don't fit). Numbers can be too depressing, and not seeing the scale move significantly after you've worked so hard on a good program can really make you lose your motivation. With that being said, if you want to keep track of your weight, I read that you should only weigh yourself once a week at the very most. Good luck!
