A Bit of Holiday Cheer

Diva and Walker spent some time bonding over a Christmas craft kit that I picked up a while back at Walmart.  I intended to have Diva and the nephews work on it together, which is why I chose the three piece kit, but the boys ended up moving out before we got to it so when Walker asked if he and Diva could work on it, I jumped at the opportunity to get it done.  Here's what they made:

It's a gingerbread train.  Pretty cute, right?  Diva started out by following the photo on the box but soon found her own decorating style.  We had lots of candy and lots of icing left over, but not enough to do both sides.  The train cars are dimensional and can be filled with candy canes or wrapped candy if you choose.  The three pieces took a little over an hour.

While at Walmart, I picked up a card for my oldest niece, Marah.    Marah is 22 years old and therefore has aged out of our family gift exchange, so I try to pick out a special card for her.  She's been having a tough time lately, judging by some of her Facebook posts, so I chose this card because the sentiment inside is about how much she is loved.  And she is, of course, so I'm glad I didn't bother to check the price before I got home.  Would you like to take a guess how much this lovely card cost?  I would have said $4.  Each tier of the tree is a separate layer of card stock, and the ornaments are little "crystal" things.  It's not musical or anything fancy like that.  Go on, take a guess.....

I was looking over my receipt when I got home and was surprised to see that I paid seven bucks for this pretty card.  Of course seven dollars won't break the budget but it does cheese me a bit that I actually paid that much for some colored paper.  I'm glad I didn't check the price in the store or I never would have bought it.  Walker was displeased, to say the least.  He's not a fan of greeting cards to begin with.  I'll have to be more careful next year.  I do hope it makes Marah smile.

  2. The GINGERBREAD TRAIN is sweet, sweet, sweet. They did a GREAT job putting it together and decorating it. LOOKS festive. I used to spend a fortune on Greeting Cards. But these days, I opt out of the expensive ones. They have gotten very pricey. Seems you were duped. The GOOD news is it is going to a DESERVING person. I hope it cheers her up, since it displeased your signifigant other. Take care.

  3. The train is so cute. I always look at those kits and pass them by - I should get one for the two bigger girls to work on. I'm just so absolutely clumsy when it comes to such things. But they could probably ace it!

As for the card - it seems she got a gift after all!! I get so irritated at the price of cards and have quit buying them, except at the Dollar Store! Of course, they're not that great and don't say much. I wish I was talented (again with the creative talent) to make my own, as some friends so such beautiful work. Imagine how much it would have been without the WalMart discount on cards! It's crazy how high cards have gotten!

Have a great week! Any snow in Minnesota yet?

  4. The train is so cute. and I think Diva and Walker did a good job. Cards are a rip off. My daughter in law used to make hers. Every Christmas she would go around picking up any thing she thought she could use the next year as people opened their gifts. She is a nurse now and has no time for it.

  5. What a good job the train looks great. I bet your niece will feel much better after getting your pretty card. Most card are looked at and then throwed away. I have stacks that I have kept just enjoy looking at them again over the years.Take care, and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
